Right Back DeAndre Yedlin completed his dream move today, transferring from the Seattle Sounders to Tottenham Hotspur. The Seattle native travelled to North London after the all-star game last week to finalize the transfer, which was $4 million.
I’ll admit, it is weird seeing DeAndre in a different uniform, but this will be great for his development. In an interview with Spurs TV (which can be found here), he mentioned his conversations with U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann about the transfer. Klinsmann encouraged DeAndre to cross the Atlantic to further his development and take advantage of this exciting new opportunity. He’ll get the opportunity to test his trade against the best of the Premier League, which is an exciting prospect.
What Does This Mean For the Sounders?
I think this speaks a lot about the Sounders organization, specifically about youth development. Yedlin was the first player signed out of the youth academy, and has grown into a star. I agree with the move of selling him now and cashing in on his good World Cup performance.
Although he was sold to Tottenham now, he was immediately loaned back to the Sounders until at least the end of the season. This will allow the Sounders to keep pushing for the title this year with Yedlin at right back. After DeAndre leaves for good, the Sounders will have $3 million to play with (that’s how much the Sounders get to keep for the transfer. MLS gets the remainder). They can either go purchase another right back, use Brad Evans there and invest the money in facilities (hint hint maybe a new field or more lights at Starfire), or trade for one. Even though DeAndre is a great player and has a bright future, this is the right move for this organization.
Here’s a fun video about Yedlin filmed before the world cup:
Oh! By the way, the Sounders beat the Chicago Fire 6-0 tonight in the U.S. Open Cup. This is a tournament mostly for reserves, but this puts us in our 5th final in 6 years, which is very impressive.
Upcoming match for the Sounders: Seattle at Real Salt Lake, Saturday August 16th 11:30 A.M.
